It’s based on what sex position you try before you sleep

After doing doggy, REM made up 33% of the candidate’s sleep, a 43% increase on the typical 23% REM each night.

The lotus sex position (39%), the eagle (35%) and the bridge (30%) are among the kinky techniques that increased REM the most. But trying the corkscrew before bed has actually been found to decrease REM sleep the most, by a staggering 26%.

Even standing sex also reduced REM sleep by 17%.

REM sleep should make up just under quarter a person’s night sleep. This is considered to be important because it stimulates parts of the brain involved with memory and learning.

According to experts, REM sleep also helps to process emotions too.

The findings also showed sex increased a man’s REM sleep more than a woman’s – with 12% compared with 2%.

Alex Ion, one of the contributors to TheDozyOwl, said this is because “women are more mentally stimulated during sex than men”.

The contributor added: “Women, are therefore more likely to be alert after sex, whereas men are typically tired after ejaculation.”

But it could also be down to the fact that women don’t orgasm as much as men.

Alex said: “Aside from the physical nature of sex, the reason it can increase your REM sleep, is that during sex oxytocin is released.”
